Does God Being Sovereign Mean He Creates, Does and is Evil?

The question of sovereignty is not whether God is or is not sovereign. The question is "how is God sovereign?"

The debate about sovereignty always comes down to God either does everything or God does nothing. Neither is true. For instance if the Bible says in only one place that something happened on Earth that was not His will then no one can ever say that God makes everything happen. If there is another will in the universe that works outside of His will then the extreme Calvinist position is a false doctrine since it ascribes every act to God's direct action, purpose and will.

Here is one clear scripture that expresses exactly that:

Jeremiah 7:31
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

31 They have built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I did not command, and it did not come into My mind.

The whole argument of determinism ends with that single scripture. And it is a good thing too. Parent's brought their little new born children and threw them alive into the fire burning on Topeth's altar. You yourself said earlier that God was the one doing that. God said He was not. The Bible tells us that. So who is unbiblical?

This shows how people can become so misled that they will do terrible things thinking God is telling them to do them. The parents herd their little children scream in pain but had no compassion on them because they believed Baal required it of them.

It is fitting that latter in history the valley of the sons of Hinnom where this altar was located was considered a cursed place.

2 Kings 23:10
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

10 He also defiled Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, that no man might make his son or his daughter pass through the fire for Molech.

That same valley became a place to dispose of refuse, dead bodies of animals and in the destruction of the city by Babylon a place where they threw human bodies.

Jeremiah 7:32
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

32 “Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when it will no longer be called Topheth, or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will bury in Topheth because there is no other place.

The Valley of the Sons of Hinnom in Hebrew is Gay Hinnom (Valley of Hinnom). When Jesus sought for an appropriate symbol for the place where those who rejected the opportunity to be transformed by him would eventually spend eternity he chose the city garbage dump..... where the fires could be seen burning continually by night and maggots could be seen eating through the refuse by day.

You simply need to read the second chapter of the Bible to understand where this other will came from:

Genesis 1:26-28
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over the cattle and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creeps on the earth.” 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule over the fish of the sea and over the birds of the sky and over every living thing that moves on the earth.”

God gave human being the rule over the Earth. We see this even further in the psalms:

Psalm 8:3-8
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

3 When I consider Your heavens, the work of Your fingers,
The moon and the stars, which You have ordained;
4 What is man that You take thought of him,
And the son of man that You care for him?
5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God,
And You crown him with glory and majesty!
6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands;
You have put all things under his feet,
7 All sheep and oxen,
And also the beasts of the field,
8 The birds of the heavens and the fish of the sea,
Whatever passes through the paths of the seas.

Humans are given rule over God's works and everything is put under their feet.

To ascribe to God evil is the epitome of evil. The most horrific things that have been done on Earth have been and are being done by those who believe God is evil. But He is not. The Bible tells us that evil is the creation of human hearts not God's.

Now the Bible also teaches that God is sovereign over all things. So how can these two seemingly opposing things be true. We see how they are true when we ask the question I first said we need to ask, "How is God sovereign?" He is sovereign through the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ.

This understanding gives light to WHY Jesus had to come. He came as a man because it was a man that had to win back the rule that God had given men and women which they gave over to satan in the fall and in their actions since. God used men and women to recover His rule. From Seth onward to Mary God used men and women who would love and obey Him to set the chaos of sin into order. The final war was began when God came to Earth in the baby in the manger. It was finished when that Baby died on the cross.

It is not by chance that right away after he was raised from the dead Jesus said these words:

Matthew 28:17-19
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

17 When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some were doubtful. 18 And Jesus came up and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. 19 Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and the Son and the Holy Spirit,

God is sovereign through Jesus who won back the world and placed it under His rightful ruler.

The chaos of history is not God's doing but human's. We are the ones that cause even the creation to suffer. It was and is our sin that corrupts the creation.

This is what the Bible says. God gave the rule to us. What comes out of that rule is our responsibility.

It is true that God allows it. But why He allows it is not because He is evil but because He wants to do what He did in the sixth day of creation. He wants to bring forth a woman to be his Son's Bride. Just like He made Eve he is now making the bride of Jesus. For this reason He has allowed history and all the pain and suffering that has come with it.

One day we will fully understand His good purpose fully and will know it had nothing of evil in it.

For now we must trust what He says that he is good and cannot do evil and does not tempt anyone with evil. Just as He says each one is led away by his own heart...... not God's.

James 1:13-17
New American Standard Bible (NASB)

13 Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am being tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, and He Himself does not tempt anyone. 14 But each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. 15 Then when lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. 16 Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good thing given and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation or shifting shadow.
